“When will your baby’s eyes change to your color?”

eyes change color

It’s November 2014. My husband, in-laws, I and baby stay in a small town in Jilin province where we visit my husband’s aunt.

At that time, our baby son’s eyes are brown with a shade of blue. My husband’s aunt studies his eyes. She then looks at my eyes, which are lighter than our son’s and green with a shade of brown. She asks: “When will his eyes change to your color?”

Has anyone ever asked you a similar question?

  1. My six-year-old grandson’s eyes are a source of puzzlement to many people. His father whose parents are Puerto Rican has dark brown eyes, and his mother (my daughter) has light brown eyes with a touch of green. But my grandson has dark blue eyes from me and some French great-grandparent on his father’s side.

  2. My mother is Afrikaans South African with bright blue eyes. My dad is Greek and has dark brown eyes. When I was born, my eyes were black and by the time I was seven, my eyes changed to hazel… According to quite a few people I know, my eyes are getting more green these days. I guess that’s what happens when you come from mixed ethnic or racial backgrounds. For the most part, the dominant gene (brown eyes) will take over, but some get lucky! 🙂

      • Some people value what is rare or an anomaly. But there are those who prefer dark eyes or there wouldn’t be the song “Brown Eyed Girl.” Personally, I was pretty excited to find my son has light colored eyes because I didn’t think it was even possible!

  3. Since I didn’t have contact with infants in Asia, I’m not really sure. . .but I think maybe they don’t have blue eyes when they’re born, because of melanin? So maybe it’s novel in that sense. My nieces are half-Asian, and they had really dark bluish brown that changed to dark brown by the time they were around a year or so old.
